Protecting Yourself During a Power Outage
When electrical power goes out unexpectedly, it can disrupt many of the things we normally take for granted. Here are some tips on how to protect yourself and your belongings during a power outage.
- Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges when the power returns.
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. If food has been exposed to temperatures of 40 degrees or higher for two hours or more, throw the food away.
- If you choose to use a generator, always use it outdoors and away from windows.
- If conditions are extremely hot or cold, go to a community location with power.
- Never use a gas stove to heat your home.
- If the power is out for more than a day, discard any medications that should have been refrigerated unless the drug label says otherwise.
- If severe weather is expected, keep your mobile phones and other electrical equipment charged and your gas tank filled.
