Five Flag Etiquette Facts Every Homeowner Should Know
Are you displaying your flag correctly? As American flags are raised nationwide to commemorate Independence Day, it’s an ideal moment to review some rules for proper flag etiquette.
To honor Old Glory appropriately, here are five flag etiquette facts outlined in the U.S. Flag Code.
Note: Although this is a U.S. federal law, following the Flag Code is voluntary and meant as a guideline.
1. The American flag prefers to stay indoors during stormy weather.
The flag should not be flown on days with bad weather conditions, except when using an all-weather flag made of nylon or a similar non-absorbent material. Fortunately, the majority of flags are crafted from materials suitable for all-weather conditions.
2. When the flag isn’t waving from a pole, it’s time to show off its vertical side!
The flag should be hung vertically, whether indoors or outdoors, allowing its folds to fall freely as if it were on a pole.
If the stripes are displayed against a wall, they can be either horizontal or vertical, with the union positioned at the top and to the flag’s right side (which is the observer’s left).
When shown in a window at home or in a business setting, the flag should follow the same orientation, with the union or blue field on the left side as seen from the street.
3. When showcasing a bunch of flags, the star-spangled banner should take center stage, flying high above the rest!
Multiple flags can be shown on the same flagpole. When displayed alongside the U.S. flag, other flags should be roughly the same size or smaller, and no flag should be positioned above the U.S. flag.
The U.S. Flag Code does not specify a limit on the number of flags that can be displayed on one pole. The decision on how many flags to display would rely on factors such as the pole’s height, the flags’ sizes, and how they visually appear when multiple flags are flown on the same pole.
4. If your flag is looking a bit dirty, it’s okay to give it a good wash or pamper it with a dry-clean!
The flag code won’t wave a finger at you for showing some love to your flag! Just follow the material’s lead when deciding to either give it a wash or a dry-clean.
5. Show off the flag only when the sun’s up, or give it a little light show after dark!
The Flag Code specifies that it is customary to exhibit the flag from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flag staffs in the open.
When a patriotic effect is intended, the flag can be displayed around the clock if adequately illuminated during nighttime hours. According to the American Legion, “proper illumination” means having a light devoted to illuminating the flag (preferred) or using a light source strong enough to make the flag recognizable as such to passersby.
